I was laid off from PalmSource today as part of the 16% reduction in force.

Ouch.

I knew the layoffs were coming, but I had predicted only a 5% chance that they would affect me. But I had also predicted less than a 50% chance of me being interested in actually being employed for the "new" PalmSource after the changes were announced.

I am feeling a bit dazed and shell shocked right now, but I am also coming to the conclusion that this is actually perhaps the best possible outcome. I am indeed no longer particularly interested in working for PalmSource, but rather than now needing to spend the summer worrying about when and if to resign, now they are actually paying me a nice severence to take the summer off.

Woohoo!

Hey Chris -
Compeau here--I expect you will look back on this as a positive inflection point in your life. Speaking as one who's been 'let go', I would encourage you to fearlessly follow the most ambitious dream you can pull together.
If you need anything give me a ring.

As a veteran of multiple layoffs, you have my full sympathy. Pretty much no matter what, it sucks. At least since you got a decent severence package, you have the time to take a few deep breaths, relax, and be nice to yourself before you have to dive into the job-hunting grind.

If I can help (not likely, being an unemployed student, but you never know) please let me know.

Whoa. THAT was a surprise! Have a nice summer!

(Oh, and now that you have a little time, wanna have lunch after I get back from OR? ;^)
8th-Jul-2005 04:29 pm (UTC) - Lunch?
Of course - lunch would be great. :-)

So, will the "new" PalmSource more closely resememble the "new" AOL or the "new" KFC? :)

Now with less soul than ever before.. (sorry I'm just little bitter)
8th-Jul-2005 04:30 pm (UTC) - Chicken?
I am not 100% in the loop on the new plans, but I am pretty certain that PalmSource has no intention whatsoever to start selling chicken. I also doubt that they will be buying Time Warner any time soon. :-)

woah, what a surprise!

This seems to be a time when lots of things are in flux for you. I wish you much happiness and positive growth as you move through it.

I'll think positivly in your direction. Hopefully you will find something you enjoy in a company where you can thrive.

Hi! Sorry to hear that. By the way: was Albert Chu from PalmSource (my pal) also fired?
8th-Jul-2005 04:31 pm (UTC) - Re: Albert Chu
It is not my place to comment on other people. You should ask him, if you want to know. Who is this, btw?

Chris, sorry to see you departing PalmSource, but from your post, it sounds like the time was right for you. I'm with Mike Compeau in suggesting you find soemthing you really want to do and go for it. This might be the best thing that ever happened to you, even though it kinda sucks now.

If you need anything, just let me know,

Chris,

So sorry to hear about the layoff, but it sounds like you'll have no problem landing on your feet. :)

PalmSource is definitely worse by not having you. You were a HUGE asset to them and I, for one, am VERY sorry to see you go.

If I can do anything, let me know
